EN: Why is there so much anger today against the \u00ab\u00a0system\u00a0\u00bb? What are the revolts and hopes shared by the younger generations worldwide? Are we increasingly alone? These are just some of the questions I raise in my research. To answer them, I’m developing a comparative sociology of life courses from an international perspective, with an increasing focus on social emotions (revolt, loneliness, hopes) and their modes of politicization.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

FR: Pourquoi tant de col\u00e8re aujourd’hui contre le \u00ab\u00a0syst\u00e8me\u00a0\u00bb ? Quels sont les r\u00e9voltes et les espoirs partag\u00e9s par les jeunes g\u00e9n\u00e9rations au niveau global ? Sommes-nous de plus en plus seuls ? Telles sont quelques-unes des questions que je soul\u00e8ve dans mes recherches. Pour y r\u00e9pondre, je d\u00e9veloppe une sociologie comparative des parcours de vie dans une perspective internationale, en portant une attention particuli\u00e8re sur les \u00e9motions sociales (r\u00e9volte, solitude, espoirs) et leurs modes de politisation. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, this perspective is reflected in three main lines of research:<\/p>

<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab\u00a0Youth, Revolts and Hopes <\/strong>: an International Comparison<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb \/ \u00ab\u00a0Jeunesse, r\u00e9voltes et espoirs<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb
My latest research focuses on anger, silence and resistance in the life courses of young adults, based on a comparative study conducted in Montreal, Santiago de Chile, Hong Kong, Paris and Madrid (funded by the Canada research Chair Program). In this research, I am interested in collectivized anger in the form of youth social movements, but also in the individual, quieter revolts that can erupt within the life courses themselves, without the possibility of collective expression.\u00a0To date, this research has mainly led to publications on youth social movements of recent years, in particular on the rise of a global discourse of generational injustice (International Sociology<\/a><\/em>), on student protests (Compare<\/em><\/a>), or on the use of slogans in social movement research (Social Movement Studies<\/em><\/a>). Other publications are in preparation. This research is currently being pursued through a collective travelling study of youth revolt and hope in Quebec and Ontario (see here an article in CBC News<\/em><\/a> or an audio on Radio Canada<\/a><\/em>), funded by the SSHRC Insight Program.<\/p>Aujourd’hui, cette perspective se refl\u00e8te dans trois grandes lignes de recherche :<\/em>

Ma derni\u00e8re recherche porte sur la col\u00e8re, le silence et la r\u00e9sistance dans les parcours de vie des jeunes adultes, \u00e0 partir d’une \u00e9tude comparative men\u00e9e \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al, Santiago du Chili, Hong Kong, Paris et Madrid (financ\u00e9e par le Programme des chaires de recherche du Canada). Dans cette recherche, je m’int\u00e9resse \u00e0 la col\u00e8re collectivis\u00e9e sous forme de mouvements sociaux de jeunes, mais aussi aux r\u00e9voltes individuelles, plus silencieuses, qui peuvent \u00e9clore au sein m\u00eame des parcours de vie, sans possibilit\u00e9 d’expression collective. A ce jour, ces recherches ont principalement donn\u00e9 lieu \u00e0 des publications sur les mouvements sociaux de jeunes de ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, en particulier sur la mont\u00e9e d’un discours global d’injustice g\u00e9n\u00e9rationnelle (International Sociology<\/em><\/a>), sur les mouvements sociaux \u00e9tudiants (Compare<\/em><\/a>), ou sur l’utilisation des slogans dans la recherche sur les mouvements sociaux (Social Movement Studies<\/em><\/a>). D’autres publications sont en pr\u00e9paration. Cette recherche se poursuit actuellement par une \u00e9tude itin\u00e9rante collective sur la r\u00e9volte et l’espoir des jeunes au Qu\u00e9bec et en Ontario (voir ici un article dans CBC News ou un audio sur Radio Canada), financ\u00e9e par le programme Insight du CRSH.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab Loneliness Throughout Life Course<\/strong> \u00bb \/ \u00ab Solitudes au fil de la vie \u00bb <\/strong>
At the same time, I am conducting research on the experiences of loneliness throughout the ages of life: my goal is to reveal different faces of loneliness, often socially invisible. In particular, I am trying to understand the current development of youth loneliness, as well as the relationships between solitude and digital bonds. This line of research has given rise to several articles, including one on the loneliness experienced by young people during the pandemic (International Journal of Adolescence and Youth<\/em><\/a>), and another on the sociology of loneliness (Sociologie et soci\u00e9t\u00e9s<\/em><\/a>), as well as a summary in the book 50 questions de sociologie<\/em><\/a>.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parall\u00e8lement, je m\u00e8ne des recherches sur les exp\u00e9riences de solitude \u00e0 travers les \u00e2ges de la vie : mon objectif est de r\u00e9v\u00e9ler les diff\u00e9rents visages de la solitude, souvent invisibles socialement. En particulier, j’essaie de comprendre l\u2018augmentation actuelle de la solitude juv\u00e9nile, ainsi que les relations entre la solitude et les liens num\u00e9riques. Cet axe de recherche a donn\u00e9 lieu \u00e0 plusieurs articles, dont un sur la solitude des jeunes pendant la pand\u00e9mie (International Journal of Adolescence and Youth<\/a><\/em>), un autre sur la sociologie de la solitude (Sociologie et soci\u00e9t\u00e9s<\/a><\/em>), ainsi qu’une synth\u00e8se dans l’ouvrage 50 questions de sociologie<\/a><\/em>.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u00ab Youth and Mental Health \u00bb<\/strong> \/ \u00ab Jeunes et sant\u00e9 mentale \u00bb <\/strong><\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, I’m coordinating a collective research project on mental health problems among young people, to gain a better understanding of the social trials associated with them, the relationship to care and forms of access to mental health resources in different social environments (funded by the SSHRC Partnership Engage Grant). This research is taking place in the Quebec context, and has given rise to a number of articles, including one on the relationship to diagnosis and care trajectories in mental health (Reflets<\/em><\/a>), one on intervention issues in mental health (Revue du CREMIS<\/em><\/a>). In the same vein, I have coordinated a research project on Becoming an adult during a pandemic, the exploratory results of which were published in the Revue du CREMIS<\/a><\/em>, in order to better understand why young adults were so strongly affected by the pandemic.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enfin, je coordonne une recherche collective sur la question de la sant\u00e9 mentale chez les jeunes, dans le but de mieux comprendre les principales \u00e9preuves sociales qui lui sont associ\u00e9es, et les diff\u00e9rentes trajectoires d’acc\u00e8s aux soins en fonction des diff\u00e9rents milieux sociaux (financ\u00e9e par le Programme Engagement partenarial du CRSH). Cette recherche s’inscrit dans le contexte qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois et a donn\u00e9 lieu \u00e0 plusieurs articles, dont un sur le rapport au diagnostic et les trajectoires de soins en sant\u00e9 mentale (Reflets<\/a><\/em>), et un autre sur les enjeux de l’intervention en sant\u00e9 mentale (Revue du CREMIS<\/a><\/em>).
